What is growth orthodontics?
Growth orthodontics is the use of easily fixed or removable tools attached directly to the teeth to create a sufficient force to direct the jaw structure to develop as desired. This is an early intervention method, especially effective for babies who are in the period of changing teeth, also known as growth patients (period from 6-14 years old)
What stage is orthodontic growth appropriate?
The first years of life are the time when people thrive the most. The growth rate of the cranial arch follows the growth of the brain: reaching 87% of the adult skull at 2 years of age, 90% at 5 years of age and 98% at 15 years of age. The skull base articular lines will close between 6-15 years of age, and the set of baby teeth will be completely replaced by permanent teeth between 12-14 years of age. Therefore, the age of 6-14 is the golden age to start orthodontic intervention, help position the jawbone, arrange the teeth that have grown back neatly as well as create ideal conditions for the unerupted teeth to develop in the right position and further avoid heavy surgeries later.
In what cases should growth orthodontics be applied?
Simple instrumental orthodontics are applicable in the following cases:
- The jaw tends to be narrow, lacking space for permanent teeth to erupt, leading to crowded and misaligned teeth It is necessary to correct early bite deviations such as deep biting, reverse biting, cross-biting …
- It is necessary to keep blanks after the loss of baby teeth before permanent teeth erupt
