Most often, we usually distinguish upper teeth, lower teeth, incisors, canines, molars. However, in dental clinics, doctors do not call it that but will use specific numbers for each tooth, such as teeth 28, teeth 36 … To understand what the doctor advises as well as your medical records, let’s learn with iMed dentistry about how to name teeth according to international standards.

In humans, there are 2 sets of teeth and 3 stages of teething: it is a set of baby teeth, a set of permanent teeth. Around the age of 6, children begin to replace baby teeth with permanent teeth. At this stage, children have both baby teeth and permanent teeth on the jaw, so it is called the mixed tooth stage.

1. Set of baby teeth

The set of milk teeth consists of 20 pieces. A milk tooth is divided into 4 arcs of 5, 6, 7, 8. In each arc, there are two incisors (middle and lateral incisors), one canine and two molars (first and second mortars), numbered from 1 to 5. Name of each tooth = jaw bow ordinal name + tooth ordinal name. For example, the large molars of the left upper jaw would be named tooth 65

2. Set of permanent teeth

A permanent tooth usually has 28 teeth. If we grow enough wisdom teeth, we will have 32 teeth. These 32 teeth will be divided into 4 arcs of teeth 1, 2, 3, 4, and numbered from 1 to 8 according to the diagram below. According to the same principle as reading the name of baby teeth, we will easily read the name of each permanent tooth in accordance with international standards. For example, the right lower jaw canine would be named tooth 43
